Hello, all!

 

Do you remember back when I wrote about my friend David's a cappella group? Well, a friend of ours (mine and D's) from way back is releasing his first EP very soon! It's my pleasure to introduce you to one of the nicest guys I know… Blake Breithaupt!

 

The three of us had the best times in our high school choir… and no doubt they did together with some of our otherfriends, before they joined me there! Of all the kids in our group, Blake was one of the most passionate about music.

 

I'm really proud of him, and how far he's come since those days. He's appeared in someone's music video, was an extra on the series finale of one of his favorite shows (One Tree Hill), and now is about to have his first cd sent off into the world. Who'da thunk it? :D

 

Anyway, I really hope you check out his music… I'd love nothing more than to see his dreams coming true. "Welcome to Someday", B! "Big sis" is very proud and excited for you!

What comes to your mind when I say… Indiana Jones? Or how about when I say, Warehouse 13?

 

Well, when thinking of a way to explain this series, and the films that spawned it… that is what comes to mind. Indy meets Warehouse, basically. And seeing as I love bothof those, I was probably guaranteed to be fascinated by this story-world!

 

Before I delve into why you should look into it, let's backtrack a bit…

 

The Films

 

A made for television movie trilogy, that follows a guy named Flynn Carsen, played by Noah Wyle. In The Librarian: Quest for the Spear(2004), we see him thrust into a world beyond anything he could have imagined. In The Librarian: Return to King Solomon's Mines (2006), we see him learning something new about people that have been a part of him and his life for a long time. And in The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice (2008) we find him in New Orleans, where he has to worry about… Vlad Dracul?!  I'd say more, but we're not here to discuss these… if you have questions, either feel free to ask me, or look into them on your own time. Enjoy!

 

The Librarians (2014)

 

Continues the mythology of the films… Flynn's job is to find and protect powerful, ancient, and more often than not, magical relics. Things such as the Ark of the Covenant, Pandora's Box, Excalibur, and somany more! In the two part series opener, things at the Library are… not going well. Mysteriously, potential librarians are being hunted down and killed. See, The Librarian, is a lifetime position… and Flynn had beat out several other interviewees to get the job. But the others are still out there… and in consideration, I guess. I mean, if Flynn dies, they will need to replace him. (poor guy, having that hanging over his head!) Anyway, where was I? Oh, the others… right! But, before we can get to them…

 

Col. Eve Baird is a no-nonsense leader of an anti-terror unit, and on her most recent assignment, who should she run into but our old friend Flynn! She thought he was crazy, and confusing, but oh whatever… she'll never see him again. (ha, yeah right! This is TV we're talking about!) Anyway, the library calls on her to be his Guardian… something which distresses him greatly, as he thinks he doesn't need one. He's done just fine on his own the last ten years! LOL!

 

Now, being forced into a partnership neither is happy about, they go off to figure out why potentials are in danger. They manage to find and warn three. (not sure what happened to the rest? There were a lot) So, unable to stay in their normal life patterns, Jacob Stone, Cassandra Cillian, and Ezekiel Jones are thrust into Flynn's world. He decides to change tradition, and takes them under his wing… making them LIT's (Librarians in Training). But, then the Serpent Brotherhood gets in the Library's and group's way, and the five are thrust into the Annex in Oregon, thinking their base is gone for good. Flynn goes off in search of the Library, which they learn is just lost, not destroyed. But not before asking Eve to be their Guardian, and protect them.

 

So, that is our lead cast... Eve, Stone (art historian with a high IQ), Cassandra ("math girl", who has a brain tumor which gives her cool abilities), and Jones (thief). Ok, and Jenkins, their cantankerous and reluctant caretaker. (he's in charge of the Annex, which is kinda like a normal library or office. You can learn and stuff, but can't access the relics)

 

With the Library gone, and because of something that happened in the premiere, magic has been released back into the world. What the show basically is, is the quartet chasing down weird occurances and objects to put everything right again.

 

It's really cool, and also, at this point in time, very short… so it's easy to get caught up on! Especially because I found that the show's website has it so that you can watch every episode! And yay, there's gonna be a season two!!

 

Anyway, the trailers aren't the greatest. But I think this fan made video is very good about showing what it's all about/like/what have you. Enjoy, and if you have questions… don't hesitate to ask! Learning is a goodthing! ;)

Warning, this show has some language… and maybe a few things I don't agree with (in terms of the magic); but for the most part it is decently family friendly? I guess it's up to you. If you end up watching, let me know! I'd love to have a friend to chat about it with! Keep an eye out for season two!

On February 27th, 2015, Leonard Nimoy passed away at the age of 83. He will be greatly missed.

The world lost a great person this past week. I never got to meet or know him personally, but I know he had a lasting impact... on my dad, me, and millions of others. Prayers for those that did know him!

"Live long and prosper. Peace and long life." It seems it could be said that that was true for the man who made those words famous... 83 years, wow! Leonard Nimoy, you will be missed. Thanks for the memories!

Despite the numerous roles he’s played over the last sixty years, Leonard Nimoy has been and always shall be my Spock. I don’t want to diminish his talent in any way by saying this, but Spock was the first role I saw him in and the last role I saw him in. And I’ve loved every moment of his character. From the Live Long and Prosper hand signal to the stoic dialogue, he was truly amazing at playing the “pointy-eared hobgoblin” (Bones’ words, not mine).

Star Trek has been something that kind of changed my life in a way only a handful of over fandoms have. For me, it was the “next step” beyond Star Wars to introduce me to my love for science fiction and fantasy. I used to “watch” the show with my dad, which became something much more special than “just another TV show” (we have all three seasons of the original series on DVD). But I’ll admit I didn’t really care much until the 2009 reboot movie came out.

And then I was in love and still am.

Leonard Nimoy starred in that as well—as the pivotal point of the story. And I loved J.J. Abrams and the rest of the crew for including him. Because it wasn’t just a reboot now. It was Star Trek in an alternate timeline. How cool was that?

In addition, Leonard Nimoy had that unique voice that could be recognized anywhere. From Atlantis to Transformers and various other voice acting roles in between I enjoyed watching movies that included his talent beyond just acting. I hadn’t even remembered how influential he had been in other things over the years.


But my favorite thing he has done besides Spock is the famous, hilarious, and downright perfect rendition of “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins.” It’s definitely worth watching (and learning). And it appeared in the 2013 STID car commercial, “The Challenge,” that featured both Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto (aka both Spocks) in a race to get to the golf country club. Also a hilarious moment that I will forever love.

Following Leonard Nimoy on twitter was also one of the best social media decisions of my life. Because not only was I following an 80+ year old man on twitter, but the advice and encouragement he spread across the web with a few typed tweets was wonderful. He “adopted” anybody who needed a grandpa as his grandchildren (“honoraries”), he encouraged people to stop smoking or not start at all, and he always ended his tweets with the #LLAP (Live Long and Prosper). He was truly an inspiration.

It was a sad day to hear he had died—especially since for me, it came quite unexpected. I immediately messaged my sister about it and we talked about how sad it was (we're both trekkies and she wrote a song for me about Star Trek once). It saddened me further when I realized next year would have been the 50th anniversary of Star Trek and he didn’t make it to that. The world has lost a bright star and it will be long and hard for Leonard Nimoy to be forgotten. He will always be Spock to me and he will always live long and prosper in the hearts of Trekkies everywhere.

Looking back through my life, there are many threads that wind themselves back through every year as far as I can remember. Leonard Nimoy is one of these threads; or, more specifically, Mr. Spock and Star Trek. I grew up with my parents telling tales of Star Trek, tossing around quotes like ‘He’s dead, Jim’ or ‘There be whales here!’ or ‘I feel…fine.’ When I was old enough to watch them, I drank them in and immediately fell in love with Spock; throughout the whole Original Series, he was my favorite. His struggle to maintain his Vulcan dignity while grappling with his human half was something of constant interest.

Several years ago, a friend gave me a dozen vintage Star Trek books. One of them was full of behind-the-scenes stories, anecdotes and tales from the cast and crew. Leonard and William had an ongoing rivalry of the best kind – who could make the other laugh, who could shock the other most. Leonard would put William’s makeup in the fridge so it was freezing the next day, William would crack a joke on set in an attempt to break Leonard up during filming. You can find bloopers from the Original series on Youtube, and watching Leonard is always the best part. 

While he played a stoic Vulcan, Leonard was always the first to smile or laugh, the first to see the joke in any situation. He was a rare person, someone who took his craft seriously, who showed a sense of humor and a sense of solemnity. When I read the news of his death, I could only sit in shock while the reality of it seeped into my bones, and then I cried. It was surreal, a part of my life that would not stretch into my future. 

Leonard Nimoy meant a lot to me. He will always be part of my past, and when I tell my own children tales of Star Trek, I’ll tell them of Spock most of all; of the most human Vulcan in the universe. Thank you for everything, Leonard Nimoy. Live long and prosper.

Star Trek in my family is practically genetic. Just like your hair and eye color, Star Trek gets passed down throughout the generations. While the concept of traveling through space is certainly interesting, it's the heart of the show that I'm after: the people in it. The various Star Trek characters have meant so much to me over the years. So when I found out about the death of Leonard Nimoy, I cried.

I had already heard about the deaths of DeForest Kelley and James Doohan, but those were before I was born. This was real and happening right in front of me. It was my first experience parting with someone from the Star Trek universe, and someone who was extremely important to me at that.

I never met Mr. Nimoy, obviously. And even when it comes to Star Trek, I know the most about Star Trek: The Next Generation, not The Original Series. But, like many of my generation, one of my first exposures to the Original Series was through the 2009 reboot. As Jaime said, Leonard Nimoy starred in that, and he was fantastic. That was only the beginning.

My dad took me through the original Star Trek movies after that. We started with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, in which there's a moment that has every Star Trek fan crying at the end. That scene, and The Wrath of Khan, are both incredibly close to my heart. We then watched Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, which brought Spock to life in the most glorious of ways. 

But, I have to say, my favorite portrayal of Spock is in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Spock tries to fit into the hip and trendy world of Los Angeles, and due to this, he interjects swear words into his speech like everyone else. Hearing a Vulcan use profanity is one of the funniest things I've seen. It's so endearing, in a way, and quite frankly, hilarious. My favorite line is, "They are not the hell your whales!"

Though Spock was a logical being, set on the pursuit of the mind, I would argue that Spock has taught me--and all of us--how to feel. He is arguably one of the most sensible, real characters in Star Trek. While he claimed to be logical, underneath it all Spock was one of the most human characters of all.

As James Kirk said in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, "Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most... human." 

But I'd be amiss not to mention that Leonard Nimoy's life went far beyond his role as Spock. Nimoy was a writer, a director, a photographer, and a musician. He wrote two autobiographies, titled I Am Not Spock and I Am Spock, respectively. The titles (and content) of these autobiographies reflect the nuanced relationship Nimoy had with Spock. While it appears Nimoy grew to appreciate Spock later in life, he certainly felt the difficulties of being so closely associated with the character.

That's why I feel it's important to note Nimoy's other achievements. He had a great love for photography. He did several photo series focused  In 2007, he did a particularly meaningful photo series called "The Full Body Project," centered around celebrating fuller body-types. (There's a really awesome article about it, here.) His photography is also in several museums. 

Nimoy also went behind the camera; he directed several Star Trek movies, starting with Star Trek III. He was also a poet, and shared one last poem with us before he died.

While Leonard Nimoy is not Spock, through his roles in Star Trek over the years, he has impacted many people, the nerd community in particular. As Jaime mentioned before, Nimoy offered himself as an adoptive grandfather to anyone who wanted it. That's the kind of person he was to us: a fatherly figure, always there for us to trailblaze the way to our next adventure. He was the helmsman of what now has become a flourishing community of nerds. In many ways, he has changed the world of story and fandom forever. We are better people because of his existence, and I am thankful that he chose to share so much with us. 

The world lost someone incredible last Friday. However, I firmly believe his legacy will live on in many ways. It will live on every time we continue to look at the world with wonder and excitement, and metaphorically explore the stars (whatever that looks like for us). Most importantly, it will live on every time we improve our world.

I can say that without a doubt, Leonard Nimoy has made the universe a better place. Because of him, I am inspired to do the same.

Before I get into the post, let me say… I'm grateful my aunt is in my life. 60 years of bringing love, light, support, culture, and literature to our family. What a blessing. This post is in honor of her, on her birthday.


So, January was a big month for my parents and I. But, if I mustbe honest, it all started in December…

Pre-Christmas: I found my dad wrapping gifts for his older sister… what were they? Seasons 1 and 2 of a certain little show most of you know and love, called Sherlock. Shocked and more than a little jealous, I told him I'd love to see them with her sometime! Fast forward to when she received it, Christmas Day: When I expressed my intense interest to see them and spend time with her, and my parents had expressed curiosity, she said "Why don't we all have a Sherlocknight?"  I was a little annoyed that I had to "share her", but figured "Oh, why not?!"

Fast forward again, to January 3rd, the four of us in the living room watching season one. We adored it, and so, seeing as some of us had been sleepy and missed details, she left them both at our house. (so we could rewatch, and see the next season) Before I get on with the post, and my further delving into the show, let me say this…

Wow… I had always figured I would love it, but… wow! Even to this day, I struggle to properly describe my reaction to it. I guess the closest I can come is… brilliant. Crazy. Fast paced, and beautiful. And I found myself wanting more. As I told a friend later, "It's a thinkin' show.", which is something there is not a lot of, and I desperately look for. Don't get me wrong, I love action and comedy and such as much as anyone. But what is the most fun and fulfilling for me, are the shows and films that make me think. So, in the course of a very short time, I became more obsessed with, and immersed in, all things related to Holmes than I ever had been before.

I knew about the character, of course. There were different adaptations, be they film or television all over the place, my whole life. I admit I haven't read the stories too much, and have barely even touched the myriad of adaptations out there. But I vividly recall the times Data, Geordi, and even Captain Picard would go on the holodeck and enter his world (yay, Star Trek: the Next Generation!) And I've followed Elementary with great interest, as well. So, again… me liking this came as no huge shock. What shocked me was the extent it overtook me!

Anyway, for months because of commercials, I had been aware of the fact that the International Sherlock Holmes Exhibition was at the Science Center. (from October to guess when!). I had wanted to go all along, but health had prevented me from doing so. But by Christmas, I figured it was now or never… it was packing up and leaving January 5th. It took some pleading and figuring, but lo and behold, on January 4th, my parents and I set out for the adventure of a lifetime.

Am I being a little dramatic? Possibly, but being a story person, and by extension, a theatre person… let's just say it's in my personality makeup to get overenthusiastic about cool things and events. So sue me! :P (I had only had one similar experience before… for "Star Trek: the Exhibition". For my thoughts on that, go here.)

Author's Note:
Remember, all of this was over a month ago, so my memory could be a little foggy. Please bear with me, and I will do my best to recount what I experienced. :) Also, pictures are limited, as I didn't think we were allowed. Later I found out we were, so all I have are the few my mom took. :(

Anyway, when we walked up the sidewalk, you could see footprints. We followed them to the building, and outside saw this...

Anyway, we walked in and got our tickets, and got in a long line. The line moved decently quickly, though was long enough for that dang T-Rex to keep staring at me, just as when I was a kid. As we got closer, we saw some things in the distance, but before getting there… we saw Star Trek Barbies in a case (ahhhh, I want!!!), and a real life axolotl like we had learned about in VBS last summer!!

Then, we saw…

Finally we were inside the Exhibit's area.

The first thing we noticed, was there were a whole bunch of displays talking about the history of the author. And more interestingly, about someone he knew, who he later based Holmes on! It was very fascinating stuff to me, though most people didn't pay too much attention to all of it. I was different, and scoured everything because a) we wouldn't get another chance and it was cool, and b) you never knew what would be important later on. ;)

We even got to see some first editions of the books, and some pages from letters and stories in the author's own handwriting! For a budding writer, and lifelong bookworm, this was especially and awesomely cool!


So, there was a lot of this, and then following all of the in-depth history, was the part that we all can admit is the reason we went. See, we (me and everyone else that bought tickets) wanted to be like/work with Sherlock Holmes, right?!

Yep, that's right… we were gonna work to solve a murder!!!

Holmes wasn't there, obviously, but he had left us recordings and notes. It was cool, we had these little books. And every stop of the interactive thing that we hit, we would get a stamp for our books. I'd love to go super into detail, but on the off chance any of you can go, I don't want to ruin it. But I willsay, that I did NOT expect what really happened, and was only a tiny bit close in probably one or two aspects. (which really confused me, as I had paid tons of attention to everything I saw and heard in that whole exhibit.)

Following the interactive portion, was the place where you could see things from… pretty much every adaptation you can think of! Old movies, the new movies, Elementary, Sherlock… it was crazy, man! I got to see a really cool old typewriter…

And what was really weird, was when I found myself standing in front of something very familiar, but it took me a minute to place it. (turns out it was from Sherlock's brownstone in Elementary!) Talk about surreal… an actual prop (I think) right in front of me, from something I see every week!


After exploring all of that, was the "gift shop" part of the exhibit. Mom got a white hat, I got: a hat, scarf, two of the three pics they took of us at the beginning, and the Official Exhibition Guide. (Hey, I had saved up! Luckily, since it was right after Christmas, and was the last day, things were super marked down. That's probably a good part of why I was able to get all that!) I have pictures of them, and the little book I mentioned from the interactive part… but I don't have them uploaded on my laptop yet. Hopefully I can get them uploaded and on here soon, so keep checking back!

In the car, when leaving the parking lot, they pointed out that on the roof of the one building (which kept changing colors), it had Sherlock's silhouette! Wish we could have taken a picture of that!

Right, so, when we got home, the three of us watched season 2… which… THAT ENDING! GAH! And a few weeks later, on the 26th, we watched two of the three episodes of season 3. (what, did I forget to mention that I had bought season 3 at best buy sometime in between there? Hehe, oops!) Now, all I have to do, is find a time to sit down with my parents and watch the final episode available. I'm sure I'll like it too!

I know, it's been awhile... sorry about that! Hopefully you'll be seeing a lot more of me really soon. :) Today's post is one I'm reallyexcited about sharing with you, and I hope that you love it.

So, how many of you love a cappella music? Well, have I got a treat for you! Now, be aware up front that I am entirely biased in this group's favor, but once you read on, you won't really blame me. :P

I guess it really starts back when I moved to my current location, in March 1996. At church, I met a family that would with time, give me two of my very best friends. One, the youngest, was a little boy of 8… I was 12. We sang together at church, and much later, in high school. We always joked he'd be famous. Now, that joke… that dream, is becoming a reality!

Enter Breath of Soul:

Five cool, talented guys who have killer voices and even bigger hearts! They are:
David Kempton (tenor), Beck Martin (tenor), Jesse Upah (baritone), Tony Marx (bass), and Jake Black (vocal percussion).

BOS, a History:

So, back in 2006, five guys (David, Tony, Jesse, and two others) from Millikin got a summer job singing at Navy Pier. At work, they were known as The Fleets. But otherwise, in reality, were called 5one. Around 2008 most of them graduated, and the group disbanded. Fast forward to 2009, and David and Jesse moved down to Nashville where Tony was. They reformed and renamed the group, and made their 2nd (a Christmas) cd. Not long after, Jake entered the picture through Craigslist (no, I'm notkidding).

They've performed for some pretty cool people (including members of Journey, Rascal Flatts, and the Gaither Vocal Band!), and opened for Lady Antebellum (in 2012, as the result of winning an a cappella contest) and Jay Leno (more recently). They've toured at churches, schools, and other events nationally, and even recently spent time in Taiwan! All while holding down regular day jobs, and spending time with their families!

Currently:

Within the last year, they wanted to go on The Sing-Off, but needed a fifth member. Enter Craigslist again, which brought them Beck. They didn't make the show, sadly… to the outrage of all friends and family. ;) However, their very own beatboxer/singer extraordinaire is currently in the Hollywood portion of American Idol auditions! Look for him, ok? (be aware that his status might have been to be sent home by this point. I didn't get to see the episodes from Hollywood week, so I can't be sure if he's still in the running or not.)

There is so much more I could say... about my experiences with the group, and David in particular, but that's a story for another day. And by all means, feel free to ask me... I could talk for days  about my dear friends/favourite group!

Well, why not?! Don't take my  word for it, though… listen to this, and tell me you don't want more. Seriously, I dare you!
                                      



I guess it's just… cool. Any time a fan on YouTube says they're the "biggest fan" (a title Jake gave me once) I have to giggle and shake my head. It's kind of neat saying that I liked/knew (of) them before they became famous. It's really awesome to be able to say "My  'kid brother' is one of the leads", and that I "helped" them win that contest. (voting and spreading the word daily) I beam with pride when I share their videos, see them sing (hearing the screams in the room), and knowing that I was one of a handful of people from home that got to see them at that Lady Antebellum concert that December! I just… mainly I just love seeing "my" Davey's dreams coming true. Call it the sentimental big sister side of me if you want. But I was part of the first group he ever sang in! Only a small select group of people (around nine or ten of us) can say that! I just hope I'm around to see his career in entertainment grow even more for many years to come. (that little ham deserves it!) And I hope that it will still allow him time to come home once in awhile… so I can sing with him again too. :)

2014 was a good year in fandom. Character development, announcements, and new content made this year a blast. However, it was also a hard year. Character deaths, painful moments, and cancellations made this year difficult. Between the highs and the lows, 2014 was jam-packed with things that affected our fangirl hearts. Today I've gathered together the Fangirl Initiative team to highlight the good and the bad. We also have high hopes for 2015, so we're presenting our wishlists for our fandoms in the coming year. 2015, here we come!

Favorite Moments of 2014: 

• One of my favorite moments in any of my fandoms this past year was on the show NCIS: Los Angeles when Deeks and Kensi FINALLY decided to be together. After way too much, “We can’t be together because of reasons,” they just decided, “So it’s crazy? Let’s be crazy!” Also it happened on Christmas, which just makes it a million times better.
• But I also seriously loved that Natasha and Steve in the Marvel Universe are basically best friends now. It is the best ever.

Hardest moments of 2014:

The hardest moment? Seeing Fili, Kili and Thorin die in The Hobbit. I knew it was coming, but I didn’t want it to happen. I’m still in mourning. Way, way too many feels.

Wishlist for 2015: 

What do I want to see in 2015? I don’t have a huge list for this (I try to take stuff as it comes in my fandoms.). But I’m really excited to see some more Clint and Natasha adorableness in Avengers: Age of Ultron. They are the best.

Just to be clear, I haven't gotten through all of my shows from 2013-present. But I'll try my best to use what I have seen, for this post!

Best moments of 2014:

Hmm, probably that there were so many awesome new shows! Girl Meets World, Gotham, The Flash, Scorpion, and The Librarians... just to name a few! ;) Of course, the awesomeness doesn't end with those, nor does it cover all the good from returning stuff! But I think, between that and being introduced to older stuff (new to me, like Sherlock) or getting back into old favorites has been fun.

In terms of music, the band Breath of Soul having a new album finally, makes me extremely happy. (but I'm kinda biased, lol)

Worst moments of 2014:

Anytime there was a missing person (here's looking at you, Castle!), or death (Under the Dome, for example) on one of my shows. Or when I learned one or more were cancelled (The Tomorrow People, especially)

Wishlist for 2015:

More excitement and rollercoaster emotions (mostly excitement) for me. Some happiness for the characters that are hurting, and an upshake (evil of me, I know) for the comfortable ones... it's what makes us see them tick. (which is the most fun, for us writers) :P And... getting caught up on all of my stuff, while delving into wonderful new ones.

Okay. It didn’t actually happen in 2014 since the movies were released several years ago, but I introduced my family to Harry Potter in the fall and it’s been pretty cool watching them enjoy and get really into both the books and movies.
(Other favorites that actually happened last year: Divergent, Mockingjay Part 1, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.)

Hardest moments of 2014: 

Ooh, so many hard moments. I’d have to say that the scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier where Bucky’s wiped after recognizing Cap on the bridge and Fili/Kili/Thorin dying in The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies are tied as the absolute hardest. Also Dean becoming a demon. That was completely awful and hurt my feels.

Wishlist for 2015: 

I’m really looking forward to seeing how Uriah is portrayed in Insurgent. That’s probably my biggest wish: that they don’t completely butcher his humor and how he interacts with Tris.

• When the eagles arrived at the battle of five armies (with Radagast along for the ride)

• When I finished The River of Time series and dealt with the Black Plague.
• When Rocket the raccoon got drunk and spilled out his true feelings about being a genetically 
• engineered, cyborg creature. 
• When Oliver Queen got stabbed with a sword and thrown off a cliff. 

Wishlist for 2015:

• I hope Agent Carter does justice for the character and time period. 
• I would like Cinderella to have an interesting twist to the story. 
• I don’t want Oliver Queen to be permanently dead, but I also don’t want him to come back to life in a cheesy way or without a valid explanation. 
• I hope Avengers Age of Ultron addresses what the characters have been doing during everything else and also reveals something about the remains of SHIELD and Coulson. 
• I want another crossover with The Flash and Arrow. 
• I desperately want Winter by Marissa Meyer to live up to the glorious fairy tale re-telling the rest of the Lunar Chronicles does. Please, please, don’t mess this one up. 
• I would like Star Wars: The Force Awakens to be more like the original trilogy than the new-ish trilogy. 
• I hope Mockingjay Part 2 is less painful than the book (but I highly doubt it will be)
• I hope Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials movie isn’t boring like the book. 
• I would like Jurassic World to be both exciting and terrifying and overall make me love dinosaurs again  like the other Jurassic Park movies.

Favorite moment of 2014: 

Maybe this is cheating, but I'm going to have to go with an entire episode-- Supernatural's "Fan Fiction." It
had all the things that make the show great, all rolled into one nostalgic, celebratory package: humor, meta insanity, an interesting monster to gank, and some good old-fashioned broments. Plus, the return of the Samulet. Kind of. It was everything I'd been hoping for from the 200th, but somehow better.

Hardest moment of 2014: 

Four words to strike flinching pain into any Supernatural fan: "I'm proud of us." I'm going to have to go with that little scene, plus all the sulfuric aftermath that followed. But an Honorable Mention ribbon goes to the episode where the Ghostfacers pulled a Journey and went their separate ways, because that was just messed up.

Wishlist for 2015: 

Tragically, my favorite book series (Maggie Stiefvater's The Raven Cycle) is coming to a close this year. The author has promised some pain, both directly and indirectly, so I'm not sure how well things will end for the characters. But all I really want is for Adam Parrish to get a decently happy ending--after all he's gone through, he deserves it.

2014 was a big year in television. A BIG YEAR. AN EXCITING YEAR. A lot of things happened, and there are a lot of things I hope to happen in 2015. Let’s take a look.

The most memorable TV events of 2014 were (in no particular order)…

• Revolution got cancelled. Okay. I just decided to start with the bad news. It had good ratings, an epic plot, amazing characters, and BAM. Cancelled. Why. Ugh. But, on to the amazingness.

• We got two of the best villains ever in the forms of Dark Stiles (Teen Wolf) and Peter Pan (Once Upon a Time). Out of the two, I might have to pick Peter Pan, but the Nogitsune is an extremely close runner-up. They channel their badness with ease and make it look good. Even sympathetic at times.

• I stopped shipping Damon and Elena. Seriously, someone, get Elena off the show. Damon deserves someone better. At least put Elena with Kai and give us something interesting. Forever came out, and is still holding steady (in spite of the Hannibal-ripoff mid-season finale there. Cough. Yeah, we noticed).

• AGENT CARTER HAPPENED, PEOPLE. And better than happened – they’re taking it straight to series! Wooohooo! 

• I stopped /NOT/ shipping Klaus and Cami and started shipping them for real. Because  let’s face it, unless there’s a supermassive crossover, Klaroline can’t continue. 

Now, to the Powers that Be, here is my wishlist for 2015.

1. Bellarke. Make it happen. Make. It. Happen.
2. Bring Peter Pan back to Once Upon a Time. Please.
3. Maybe even bring DarkStiles back. Yeah.
4. Lots of hugging on Supernatural. And maybe rescue Adam, that would be cool.
5. Have Ward return to S.H.I.E.L.D. SKYEWARD FOREVER.
6. Also, FitzSimmons. Somebody say SOMETHING about ANYTHING.
7. Bellarke. Did I mention Bellarke?
8. COULD WE GET A SILM ARILLION TV SERIES? I WILL WORK FOR IT. I WILL. I PROMISE. JUST CAST MAEDHROS WELL. 
9. Also, bring Peter Pan back. 
10. There’s talk of reviving Pushing Daisies with a movie or a musical or something. I say yes. Go for it. DO IT. DO THE THING.
11. Peter Pan. Bring him back.

• The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies coming out! Even though it was an emotional film... still a great ending. 
• Guardians of the Galaxy being released in theatres. 
• Captain America: The Winter Soldier and all the character development that happened. 

Hardest moments of 2014: 

• Kili, Fili, and Thorin dying in The Battle of the Five Armies and Bilbo, the dwarves, and Tauriel's grief... so sad! 
• The Hobbit films being over and having to say one last goodbye to Middle-earth (thank goodness we can always return). 
• Groot "dying" in Guardians, although that had more of a happy ending. 

Wishlist for 2015: 

• More Tolkien stuff? Nah, I guess I don't want Peter Jackson deviating from Tolkien's plans tooooo much, but I would never mind another trip back to Middle-earth. 
• News of a live action, actually-true-to-the-book Howl's Moving Castle film being made, although that's more of a dream than it'll ever be reality (one can still dream, though). 
• And news of a Queen's Thief movie series being made, although that dream is also far away.

Happiest Moments of 2014:

• FINALLY getting the third season of Sherlock! And solving the mystery left by the second season.
• After a wait almost as long as the Sherlock hiatus, the final book in my favorite series, The River of Time by Lisa Bergren, released. Oh. My. Word. If you haven’t read this series yet, do it. Please, do it. And then tell me about it, so I can relieve the mixture of triumph and anguish.
• The Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer was more amazing than I dared to hope.
• The final Hobbit movie was also amazing. I’m not sure it should go under “happiest moments,” considering how much I cried, but it was bittersweet and brilliant, and almost all I could have wished for as the last goodbye. And that song- Billy Boyd singing, “The Last Goodbye!” I don’t think any other song mesmerized me in 2014 like that one.
• I know there’s been mixed feelings about Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange, but I was thrilled from the start. Especially since I heard somewhere that Dr. Strange has encountered Loki in the comics. Fingers crossed…

Hardest Moments of 2014:

• The Battle of the Five Armies. Yes, the Hobbit movie made me ecstatic, but it also left me crying and rocking myself quietly. It was partly because of the tragic scenes, and partly because this was my final farewell to Middle Earth movies. What will I look forward to next December?
• Watching Guardians of the Galaxy. This wasn’t hard emotionally; it was just painful for other reasons. I never had high expectations for the film, but so many people told me it was “the best Marvel movie ever.” Despite my doubts, I watched it, hoping to be proven wrong. Instead, it was as bad as I feared. Worse, even. Hold your fire, Marvel fans! I’m still majorly disappointed. Best Marvel movie? To me, it was one of the worst.
• The end of Mockingjay. Although I would have liked one longer film instead of two shorter installments, the ending got me. So did almost every scene with Gale. Poor guy.
• Bucky as the Winter Soldier. Someone help him remember!

2015 Wishlist:

• Loki to appear in the new Avengers film. I know he won’t, but I still wish for it.
• I want an extra-long extended edition of the Battle of the Five Armies. It was the shortest Middle Earth movie, and I wish it had been longer to include certain scenes, such as Thorin’s funeral. I’m hoping when the Extended Edition releases, that scene will be included, among others.
• The final Mockingjay needs to include more of Finnick. And definitely the “real or not real” moments.
• Even if they don’t get together, I want Sherlock to pay more attention to Molly. I also want the Christmas special that’s being talked about.

• Reading Second Star by Alyssa B. Sheinmel. It proved to me I could fall in love with reading again.
• Watching 13 Going on 30. A young Mark Ruffalo is the greatest thing.
• When Mat Franco won America's Got Talent.
• Falling into the Once Upon a Time fandom with my sister.
• Watching the movie Stuck In Love. As a writer, it really resonated with me.
• The Star Wars: Episode VII trailer. I did not expect to like it that much, but I did.
• I didn't like the first two movies in The Hobbit trilogy as much as I'd hoped, but the third film was an amazing resolution.
• Starting this blog!
• Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier. My heart is still broken, but it was an amazing film.

Hardest moments of 2014:

• The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. midseason finale.
• When the reality show Utopia was canceled. Our love may have been shortlived, but it will never be forgotten.
• Watching the first X-Men. While I did like it, it was also mildly disappointing. I wanted way more character development than I got. (For that, I might just have to read the comics.)
• When ----Jim---- died on The Walking Dead. If I cried that much at something that didn't even matter, how much worse will it be later?!?
• The end of the Tolkien movies. It's truly the end of an era, and I'm sad.
• Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier. Steve and Bucky. They loved each other so much, and... and... [sobs] I'm with you till the end of the line, pal.

Wishlist for 2015:

• I can't wait for the midseason premiere of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in March. I hope to see some amazing moments with Skye. Also, is it too much to ask for Fitzsimmons to reunite?
• For Avengers 2: Age of Ultron to live up to my expectations. 
• A Black Widow movie.
• A fitting end to The Hunger Games trilogy.
• More Bucky, more Tony Stark, more Steve Rogers. More Avengers. More quality Marvel. More everything.
• I hope the final season of Parks and Recreation lives up to my expectations. Same with season 4 of New Girl. 
• As far as my ships, I'd like Nick and Jess from New Girl to get back together, please! I'd like to see even more BROTPs in Avengers 2. I want Andy and April from Parks and Rec to have a child. I want Penny and Leonard from The Big Bang Theory to get married. I want John and Mary from Sherlock to have a happy ending. I want to see more of Steve and Sharon Carter from the Marvel Universe (and Steve and Natasha). I want more Steve and Natasha, more Clint and Natasha, and more Steve and Bucky. 
• I want to finally have enough time to watch all the shows I want to see.
• I want all my favorite characters to be happy, but more than that, I want feels, feels, feels.

2015 will be an exciting year! How did your fandoms treat you in 2014? What's on your wishlist for 2015?

I'm back, did you miss me? Ok, enough joking around…

This post will probably be one of the ones that makes me the most nervous. I suppose it's because it's about a film that matters a great deal to me, and I know that it won't be everyone's cup of tea. I don't want you to think I’m weird, and all that. But I'm willing to risk that, because I think it's a great shame that next to nobody knows about it. I'm tired of being one of a handful of people that cares about it, let alone knows about it. I want everyone to have the chance to see it… even if they end up hating it. Enjoyment of, and learning from, something is multiplied when shared. It's not quite hitting where it should for me, if I have no one to analyze it with. "Meet me halfway, ____?"

At its heart, this movie is about a young boy, struggling to understand how to cope with loss and life.

Without giving too much away, I will endeavor to explain why it meant so much to me, all while getting you curious enough to take the leap yourself. (I hope, that is.)

Ryan Flynn, when we meet him, is mute by choice, as a result of something that happened years earlier. Let's stop there a moment.

I need to give major props to the actor, Ryan Kelley… I had thought his small contribution to Smallville history was incredible. So much so, that when I saw a DVD cover with him on it at the video store, I had to rent it. (ok, the synopsis on the back was also intriguing) It was this film… and this role is what cemented my admiration for him from that point on. Speaking as a community theatre actress, and as a person in general… what he pulled off as a teenager… in this role, was difficult.

Sure, everyone is expressive in their own way. But to get your point across, in a genuine, believable way, with just your eyes and expressions is tricky. But he pulled it off… I always knew what he was thinking or trying to say, even when he wasn't speaking. Odd as it sounds, the times he didn't speak, were the ones that made me realize how gifted an actor he truly is. Anyway, back to the film itself.

It's obvious from the beginning, that Ryan's hurting… his mom has trouble reaching him. His best friend Rocky (played by Michael Angarano) has a little better luck, but not much…

and let's just say, I wish everyone had a friend like him. He's awesome. :) Fairly early on in the film, something happens that changes everything.

This is when things get wacky for Ryan… he finds himself somewhere familiar, yet changed. A place where his grandfather (Armin Mueller-Stahl) with Alzheimer's is lucid, and he meets a spunky girl named Melanie (played by Hayden Panettiere) who has been there for years. A place known as The Dust Factory… a sort of in-between place. (if I say much more, it'll ruin it)

Throughout this film, our protagonist is forced to face his insecurities and fears… and to relearn about love, imagination, faith and hope.

Favorite quotes, that are always better in context:

I totally get what he means by that!! I don't know where I'd be without God…


2) "Sometimes, you have to step back, to see what's right in front of you." -Grandpa

I've totally felt this way, and said this myself. I am convinced I should die in my sleep. Life is painful enough… why leave this world that way? Glad to know this is a more universal feeling than I originally thought.

I have to admit, writing about this beautiful, deep, lost in time film from 2004 took some thinking on my part. I had to figure out the perfect way to draw you in, without totally spoiling it for you. I would have loved to have said more… and to shown you more quotes. And if this was a more popular film, and a regular review… I wouldn't have minded so much if I "ruined" it. But I dare not… it's one of those things you have to experience for yourself, to truly "get". And I don't want to take that from you. I mean, why give you every detail and have you wonder why you watched it… if I gave it all away, there'd be no point. And my goal for this post, is to get you to see it. Anyway, I'll leave you now, with this…

As I told Sky, I'm really honored to be allowed to write a post for you… especially one like this! It contains some of the things that make up who I am, and are most dear to me… a hometown connection, theatre, stories, and nostalgia.

I've always loved Peter Pan… I don't remember much about the book, the Disney film, Neverland, or some of the others. I do vividly remember the Jeremy Sumpter version, (the much beloved Robin Williams movie) Hook, and the one that comes full circle this weekend… the stage play. I've never seen it in person, but I can recall countless times of curling up with my sister in front of the living room television, watching the Mary Martin version on VHS. (our parents had taped it off of tv. Just as memorable to me, are the commercials on that tape! Such as Campbell's soup, McDonald's, and Peter Pan Peanut Butter!) I remember all of the times, that I would sing along… or sing the songs later on my own.

All of us, or most at any rate, remember when NBC made the Sound of Music Live! last year. Isn't it interesting that the first two they pick for live stage broadcasts are two of my most cherished childhood favorites?! First that, now Peter Pan has been shown live once more (Thursday), about the time the stage play is turning 60!

When I first heard it was to be made, I was… unsure as to how to feel. The excitement was there… but I was also worried. What would it's impact be, on the memory of the one I grew up with? Would they do it justice? Would I like it, while others hated it… like with Sound of Music? Well, we need wonder no more. I'll try to keep it as brief as possible… however, I make no promise. :P

My overall impression:

Well, because of needing sleep and dealing with health issues, I watched it over two nights (thank you, DVR!). And hopefully thiswill tell you something… I'm sitting here crying, sing-songing "I'm crying" to the tune of "I'm flying", and will occasionally burst out "Can I be Peter Pan when I grow up? What funthat would be!" :P

Getting picky:

Well, if my biggest "complaint" with it, is that I can see the wires holding them up when they fly, then we're in pretty good shape! That doesn't even bug me so much, because having done live theatre, and that's what this is, things like that happen. You can't expect it to change, just because we're seeing it on tv, rather than in person. Theatre is theatre… tricks of the trade, are tricks of the trade. End of story. Now, moving on…

Characters/actors:

Hearing about this as each role was cast was pretty interesting. We have a few big names (Christopher Walken, Minnie Driver), cast members from Newsies on broadway and from the Muny stage… and Brian Williams' daughter in the lead! Craziness, right? Now that I've seen it: Wow… everyone was sogreat! But within that, I did have some definiteopinions, when comparing it to the version I knew as a little girl. And here they are…

1. The Lost Boys… seemed a little old to me, but seeing as they were similar in age to Peter, I almost didn't mind. (though, when John and Michael are the youngest and not their peers, it's kind of off a little. Haha) But they had great personalities, and I honestly grew to care for each of them, even though you don't know their names (except for Slightly!)
2. Tiger Lily, her tribe, the pirates, and all the rest were fantastic as well. I especially liked the Darling parents. Might I quickly add here, that at first I was sad that Christian Borle's part wasn't larger… but now that I've seen the whole thing, I don't know where else I would have put him. He made a really memorable Father and Smee… though isn't the actor who plays father, traditionally the one who plays Hook? Ah well, he was awesome!
3. Wendy Moira Angela Darling… Muny alumni, Taylor Louderman, was amazing as the wide-eyed girl who was coming to terms with growing up. She shone the most: in her solo when Peter was showing her the dangers of Neverland, tucking in the Lost Boys... and most of all, when trying to cheer up any of them (Peter, especially). You could totally see that she felt "mother-ish" toward all (but one!) of the boys... a hint of the mum she'd someday be. ;) I'm thinking that it's nice to be able to "claim" her as one of our own! (growing up close to certain places, people feel a sort of kinship connection to others from your own area. I'm sure you can think of some from yours...)
4. Hook… Christopher Walken was superb, really. (you wouldn't expect him to keep up with the rest that well at his age, but WOW!) That said, I think I prefer the old Hook… not sure why, can't put my finger on it. But there it is. (I think it was Cyril Ritchard)
5. The reason we're all here… Peter Pan.

Allison Williams was fabulous! I still can't believe I'm saying this, after spending so long growing up with Mary Martin… but I like the new Peter better!! Although Mary is a slight bit cockier (which the character is known to be), Allison is decidedly more boyish in her mannerisms and expressions. If not for any other reason, I would watch it a million times just to see her in the role. (Makes me wish I could do Shrek the musical over again… I'd play Hansel a little differently this time, given the chance)

Songs, new and old:

To be honest, I didn't see much different song-wise. I mean, obviously a few things were added (like a new song for Wendy, and more singing time for their mother, for example), but it seemed pretty much "I know that one!!" the entire show. Note… I did sing along with the movie… just not loudly (so I could hear the actors). The one I was most curious about, after reading things online, was the replacement for the song with the Indians ("Ugg-a-Wugg"). Although I kinda missed the old way, I seriously didn't notice much difference in terms of words. In my mind, they cut a few lines, and changed the title… but other than where they were when it was sung, I didn't see much changed. So, I needn't have been anxious, it worked out just fine! Oh, and Peter's new song before the children were to leave (we all know they were really just gonna be taken captive, but whatevs)? That was… that was SO sad, and it was sung so convincingly and movingly that I was near tears for the poor kid. *sniff*

Sets:

I can't decide which I like better. I think that I prefer the Darling home in the old one, and everything else in the new. That said, I miss the little house that they built around Wendy in the old one… that bit was cute. And I do like the Lost Boys' hideout (and the nursery's window) in the new one.It's complicated, alright?!

Other thoughts:

Nana as a real dog, rather than whatever they did before? I approve! Two shadows for Peter in "I've Gotta Crow"? Interesting… missed the shadow play thingummy he did in the old one. Michael using the word "awesome" as they flew? Not the best choice, when coming from a kid raised in Victorian London, but I'll allow it. :P  A purpley-blue-pink crocodile? Okay, that was different… and went well with the scenery, which was all bright and cheery in hues. And Jane, at the end, was so adorable and seeing her and Peter fly off… *sniff* That's when I started bawling, I think.

Grade from me: A+

Would I watch it again, and even buy it? Yes, a million times, yes!That said, I'll still watch the old version, for memories' sake… I don't have the heart to let it go. I suppose it's the same as still watching BBC's Narnia, while loving the Walden Media versions. You can have a place in your heart for both… they mean different things, and are from different phases of your life.

Should you, or shouldn't you:

Should you preorder the DVD right now? In my opinion, yes!And while you wait for it to be available on the 16th, you'll be happy to know you don't have to wait that long. If you missed it the first time, or want to see it all again, it's re-airing on the 13th… so mark your calendars!

Right now, I'm a massive puddle of contentment, and frankly, surprised I was able to coherently form this much into a review. Be on the lookout for edits, once I've had a chance to rewatch the old version. I might feel the need to add a thought or two. So, keep checking back. ;)
